2021 was incredibly challenging for most due to the prolonged pandemic that forced all to be resilient. Personally, my year
started off rocky and I had to push through an intense personal storm, but I persevered.
The past year has also been one of great achievement with the completion my inspirational memoir/self-help book: Greatness Awaits You! 23 Ways to Unlock the Greatness Within (preorder on www.seeds2fruitmotivation.com until Jan 22nd and officially launching Feb 12th on Amazon).
I also had a big job transition ending my five years at the helm of Homeless Children’s Education Fund. I am now the President & CEO of the Urban League of Greater Pittsburgh.
Although 2021 was a good year, I set resolutions and did not accomplish them all. If you have not achieved all your resolutions, you are not alone. According to researchers about 60% of American’s set resolutions, but only about 8 to 12% realize them. Key resolutions include to exercise more, lose weight, drink less, find a new job, start a business and the list goes on.
If you are like me, you really want to achieve your resolutions. A resolution is a firm decision to do something. However, if you set a firm decision to do something and are not able to accomplish it that can be demoralizing. I want to see you win and don’t want to see you set yourself up for failure this year. I have provided 7 tips to help you move from wishful thinking to setting and accomplishing your goals.
7 Tips to Achieve Your Goals for the Year:
1. Write Them Down-According to Levi Lesko, author of I Declare War, people who write down their goals are 42% more likely to accomplish them than those who do not. Further, they earn nine times more over their lifetimes. There is something powerful about writing something down on paper or digitally.
2. Be Positive-Often, we set goals for the year but can have a negative mindset. You must start off believing that you can do it. Watch what you say to yourself and make sure that you are only thinking positive thoughts. A positive mindset can significantly increase the likelihood of realizing your goals.
3. Fight Fear of Failure and Procrastination-When you set off to achieve your goals for the year there is great enthusiasm. As the year progresses you may become less enthusiastic and tend to procrastinate. Keep pushing past procrastination and fear of failure. Keep your mind on the desired outcome and keep pushing even when you don’t feel like it or when you don’t believe you can do it.
4. Be Patient-It’s a Process-As you pursue your goals, there will be days that you do well and others where you fail miserably. That is okay and part of the process. Despite your obstacles, you must be patient and persistent and get back up and keep pushing. Trying to accomplish any goal is more than a destination, but a journey. Trust the process!
5. Be Realistic-Change is never easy, and it is a process to establish new habits. According to Levi Lesko, 45% of our brain’s activities are on auto pilot and it is not easy as we work to change certain behaviors. That does not mean that change isn’t possible, but that it will take some work and intentionality to change. Set realistic goals that you can accomplish.
6. Set Specific and Measurable Goals-Don’t just set a resolution. Create specific and measurable goals. For example, if you want to get into shape, you may set how much and specific milestones and couple that with a plan to get there. Whatever you do be intentional and set a timeline with measurable outcomes.
7. Rally the Troops-As you set your goals, find an accountability partner(s) for support. They can help keep you on track by holding you accountable and by simply working with you to achieve your goals. Having the proper support can make the difference between success or failure on the road to goal attainment. If your troops are not supportive, you may need to connect with people who support you.
Now that you have more tools to achieve your goals, it’s time to get off the bench and into the game! Get out there and start working on your goals for the year. Stay positive and focused believing that you can achieve your goals. You will have victories and setbacks along the way and that is okay, just keep pushing and believing focusing not only on what you are doing, but why are doing it!
You can do it…I believe in you!
