Earlier this year, I met a young man who is very successful and appears to have it all together. He has advanced degrees and certifications, a high-paying job, and a beautiful family. However, the more I talk to him, the more I see that he is broken inside. I have had conversations with several others like him and have seen the same pattern.
We live in a society that puts a premium on success, and I am all for success. But if success means that you have all the external indicators that people find attractive yet you are broken inside, then that is the type of success that I can do without.
I believe it is critical that we are complete as people. At the core, everyone and everything has to have a strong foundation to weather life’s storms and to reach higher heights. If you build a structure and do not shore up the foundation, it will likely collapse when faced with the many forces of nature. It also may simply succumb to the weight of the floors above it or the weight of the structure itself!
As people, we are no different! If our sense of self-worth – minus the jobs, houses, fancy cars, accolades, positions, fame and fortune – is lacking, we are destined for failure. What does it say about us as a society if we shine on the outside, but are broken inside?
We cannot win until we heal the person within. We need success that manifests itself on the inside and outside of us. We don’t need success that is simply external and superficial! Look at some of our celebrities, who shine brightly like stars, but then crash to earth like meteorites! Those crashes have a lot to do with the pressures of stardom, and in many cases, very fragile foundations and the pursuit of superficial and fleeting things.
Again, I am a big fan of success that is substantive and sustainable, not based on superficiality. I want people to have real success that is deeper than what is seen on the outside of the person. I want people to realize their full potential, live authentically, and lead meaningful and purposeful lives. Let’s explore some ways to heal the inner self:

Very timely for me brother! After some personal work over the last few years, I’m now redefining what success is for me. Feeling really good about where things are going. Being in a daily prayer habit has been fantastic. I have often forgotten that I was put on this earth first for God’s pleasure, a relationship with Him. Which means, my worth isn’t based on something that I do or how much I have. Starting there has been a great reset. Relationship selection is critical in life. Its almost everything. I’ve learned that you can’t always reconcile even when you… Read more »
