A good friend asked me to meet him for lunch to update me on his current job situation. At lunch he explained he was no longer there and that it was a mutual separation. He felt like he just did not fit in to the culture and that his talents and contributions were not valued or appreciated. Most importantly, he was not passionate about the work. The situation was demoralizing and negatively impacted his confidence and self-esteem. Although he does not have another job lined up yet, he is relieved to be away from the toxicity while he contemplates his next move.
I certainly can relate to his story as I had a similar experience that quite frankly was not good for my mental health! It zapped my energy, creativity and filled me with anxiety.
If you can relate, you are not alone as 85% of people are in jobs that they hate. They struggle to get out of bed to go into the office every morning. Many are in jobs where they have never had any passion for the work, or the passion has evaporated, and the job simply becomes just a paycheck. To make matters worse, some are in toxic and hostile work environments. Sadly, many have grown so accustomed to the toxicity and dysfunction that they consider it normal!
If you are currently in a job that is making you miserable, it may be time to freshen up that resume, create an exit plan and run for the nearest exit as if your life depends on it. Life is too short to be miserable and no job is worth your sanity! In the words of Jordan Peele: Get out!
Make today great!
