I enjoy being a leader and being a student of leadership. I also enjoy coaching and inspiring other leaders to level up. There are several main principles of leadership to which I ascribe, but the most important and challenging is “modeling the way”.
It is easy to establish a beautifully written corporate or organization value statement, but if leaders don’t set the example, they are just empty words not worthy of the paper they are printed on. Although being a leader of any organization is incredibly challenging, it is critical to maintain your integrity.
Some appear shocked when unethical or bad behavior is rampant in some organizations, but you only need to look at the head to see why the tail is out of order.
If you want your team to respect your leadership and live the missions and values of your organization, you must model the way. One of my favorite leadership gurus John Maxwell says, “Followers may doubt what leaders say, but usually believe what they do!”
No leader is perfect, but leaders will never teach until they practice what they preach!
