As a young Black man growing up in Pittsburgh, I did not see many Black men in power. Seeing a 4-Star General on television grabbed my attention! Politics aside, I was simply impressed to see someone who looked like me creating a path for others to follow. His image and position reinforced that anything was possible for me.
Given that context, I was excited to meet him in 2013. I received this privilege when I received the National Diversity Council’s Multicultural Leadership Award. All recipients were allowed to take a picture with the first Black Secretary of State. I was nervous because I had never met someone like him. I did not know the protocols and kept my distance when I shook his hand. Nevertheless, it was a proud moment for me.
Reflecting on my own life, I had many first in my family: the first to graduate from college, buy his own home, etc. Therefore, I have great respect for people who push through great adversity to blaze a trail!
When you have the courage to go where no one like you has gone before…Greatness Awaits You! RIP Colin Powell; thanks for blazing a trail for others like me to follow!
Make today great!
Remember, Greatness Awaits You!
