As a leader, I am aware of the pressures involved in meeting organizational goals and the effort required to advance the mission. We often prioritize the needs of the organization and the team while neglecting our mental and physical health.
A key tenet of leadership is modeling the way. Although none of us is perfect, we must set a good example of self-care by prioritizing our mental and physical health.
We need to set an example by eating a healthy diet, committing to exercise or some form of physical activity, taking lunch breaks, taking time off, and setting work boundaries to unplug from emails. We should also practice mindfulness and not be afraid to ask for help when needed.
Prioritizing your mental and physical health in leadership is no easy task but is necessary if you want to be an effective leader. Failure to do so will lead to burnout, major health issues, and unhealthy work environments.
Let’s commit to leading by example, nurturing our well-being, and fostering a healthier, more resilient workplace for everyone.
