There is nothing wrong with being ambitious, but sometimes we work so hard to pursue what we don’t have, we forget to appreciate what we do have!
A mother shared with me her frustration with her 16-year-old son because he does not appreciate what he has or what they do for him. He is ashamed to bring people to their house because it is not a big house like his friends whose parents are, doctors, lawyers and people of affluence and influence. Keep in mind that he has a very nice private living area in the basement that is newly remodeled and furnished. They recently offered to buy him a car and he refused, as he wants a more expensive one comparable to his peers.
Hopefully she will provide a serious wake up call to her son and help him realize that he needs to be thankful for who he is and what he has…especially parents who care about him.
If we are honest, we can all think of times when we like this teenager have been ungrateful. Instead of counting our blessings, we add up our troubles or focus on what we don’t have or what others have compared to us!
Here’s a little secret, learning to be thankful for what you have is the secret to true happiness! People often ask why I am always smiling. Well, it’s because I am thankful for many small blessings: health, strength, food on the table and family and friends. My situation is never perfect, but it could always be worse. I realize that my worst day would be someone else’s best day. A little gratitude goes a long way!
3 Ways to Have More Gratitude
- Count Your Blessing-When you wake up and before you go to bed, think of 3 things you are thankful for. This practiced does wonders for the smile and soul! This is a great over the counter antidepressant!
- See the Positive-No matter what happens think of 1 positive thing you can takeaway, even if it is just a lesson. This is a more productive way of dealing with adversity and a cure for misery! Someone once said, “Pain is inevitable, but misery is an option!”
- Put Everything into Perspective-The very things that we complain about, others would happily trade places with us because they don’t have the very things we don’t appreciate. It’s all relative and all about perspective!
When you make the decision to be more grateful, you will instantaneously improve your quality of life! “If you want to find happiness, find gratitude.”-Steve Maraboli
